The Stuff of Stodge

Ah, the calzone.

The first time I had one of these was with one of my best mates, Sam. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I had gone to Zizzi as well. I wasn't even aware of what a calzone was, let alone know what it might look like.

"We didn't order starters did we?" I asked Sam, when I spotted the waiter walking our way with two dishes. From a distance, it looked like garlic bread, but when it was put in front of me, I realised that this was My Calzone.

Woah. This is a giant pizza folded in half! With extra starch. Look at that crust. What I love about calzones is that the filling inside stays lovely and hot as you eat it. I hate it when my food goes cold - partly why I tend to gulp my food down rather quickly.

But my goodness, does it fill you up! Pizzas generally aren't one of the healthiest things to eat anyway since they're the ultimate killer combo of high protein and bulky carbs. And not in a good way. Hm, so that's why you feel so tired afterwards. Of course, you could just be overeating, but the combination of certain foods can wreak havoc on your digestive system. Even a fruit salad with melon is not a good idea because melon itself has so much water anyway that you fill up your stomach really quickly on this alone.

When I go to Ealing for work, I sometimes get one of those tropical fruit salad things from Tescos. I didn't know about the melon thing until recently. But thinking back about it now, it did always surprise me that I always felt so full afterwards to the point where I wasn't able to eat anything else for lunch. Just fruit for lunch? It's what I usually just snack on during the day. Fancy that!

Think about it. When do you usually feel bloated after eating? Big sandwich, pasta, burgers, roast dinners and the like, right? Although as demonstrated back in August, it is sometimes possible to fit an extra roast dinner into an already-full-from-a-roast-lunch stomach.

It's good to get a bit of real stodge in you every now and again. It's the stuff of good food.

Cornish pasty anyone?
